Selena Quintanilla Perez (Spanish pronunciation"se'lena kinta'nija 'pere April 16, 1971 - March 31 1995) was an American Tejano singer. She was dubbed the "Queen of Tejano music" her contributions to music and fashion made her one of the most celebrated Mexican-American entertainers of the latter half of the 20th century. Billboard magazine placed her third on their 2020 list of "Greatest Latino Artists" Based on Latin albums and Latin charts of music. Her clothing choices earned her the name "Tejano Madonna". She is also regarded as one of the most popular Latin performers of all time . She has been credited with bringing the Tejano genre into the mainstream market.The youngest child of the Quintanilla family, she made her debut on the scene of music as part of the group Selena y Los Dinos, which included her elder siblings A.B. Quintanilla Quintanilla. In the 1980s, she was often criticized for singing Tejano music which was a male-dominated music genre. Also, she was denied bookings in Texas venues. But her popularity increased when she was awarded the Tejano Music Award for Female Vocalist of the Year in 1987. She won nine consecutive times. She signed with EMI Latin in 1989. Her self-titled debut album was released in the year following. Her brother was her principal music producer and songwriter. Entre a Mi Mundo (1992) was a top album, reaching number 1 on the US Billboard Regional Mexican Albums Chart for eight consecutive month. The album's popularity in the marketplace earned music critics the right to call it the "breakthrough" record of her career. One of the singles, "Como la Flor", was a hit and became her signature song. Live! Live! Amor Prohibido was her 1994 album. It became one of the most popular Latin albums. The album was widely praised for being the catalyst for Tejano music's first commercially viable era because it became one the most sought-after Latin music subgenres of the time.
